On the Day of the Nativity of Our Lord
This is a page for Christmas Day from a 17th Century French book for chanting the Divine Office in monasteries., called an Antiphonary. The Latin word "Cantate" means "sing". The Latin words say, in part, "The Angel said to the shepherds, 'Great joy to you and to all people, for unto you is born this day a Savior...[in the City of David who is Christ the Lord.]'"
The music is written in neumes, the musical notation of Gregorian Chant. The book is printed in black ink on paper and the colors were added by hand.
