On January 20, 2012, the US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, on behalf of President Obama’s Administration, announced that all religious institutions that either employ or serve people who are not members of their particular religious group will be compelled to provide so-called “preventive services for women” (i.e., contraceptives, inclluding abortifacients, and sterilization) without cost, under the health care plan, PPACA.

This mandate includes all Catholic hospitals and charities, as well as any Catholic organization with an outreach to, or who might employ anyone who is not a Catholic. All such religious groups must comply with this mandate by August 2013.

Thus our statement in support of the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, originally released on September 26, 2011, acquires greater urgency, and we renew this statement today.

We also strongly encourage your participation in this effort to protect religious liberty and freedom of conscience for all religious believers. Address of His Holiness Benedict XVI to the Bishops of the United States of America on their "Ad Limina" visit, Thursday, January 19, 2012

USCCB Website: Religious Liberty Section

Fortnight for Freedom
On April 12, the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a document, "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty,” outlining the bishops’ concerns over threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad. The bishops called for a “Fortnight for Freedom,” a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21-July 4.

Bishops in their own dioceses are encouraged to arrange special events to highlight the importance of defending religious freedom. Catholic institutions are encouraged to do the same, especially in cooperation with other Christians, Jews, people of other faiths and all who wish to defend our most cherished freedom.

The fourteen days from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “fortnight for freedom”—a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action would emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Dioceses and parishes around the country could choose a date in that period for special events that would constitute a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty.

In Defense of Religious Freedom
A Statement by Evangelicals and Catholics Together.

Last paragraph:
“In all of this, we believe we are acting as Christians have been commanded to act, and speaking as citizens of mature democracies ought to speak. Our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and our baptism in the name of the Most Holy Trinity, compels us to defend the religious freedom of all who are created in the image of God. Our gratitude for the religious freedom that has been a hallmark of North America for over two centuries compels us to work to defend religious freedom in the United States and Canada, and to work for the religious freedom of others in all lands. For the sake of the common good, we, Evangelicals and Catholics Together, urge our fellow citizens and our public officials to join us in the renewal of religious freedom: to defend religious freedom for all persons and to guard against its erosion in our societies. “
