Cover: The Conversion of Saul (detail) by Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475-1564) Fresco 1542-45, Pauline Chapel, Apostolic Palace, Vatican.

The conversion of Saul (Saint Paul) is recounted in Acts 9:1-9. Saul was on the road to Damascus where he planned to obtain authorization from the synagogue to arrest Christians. He was struck to the ground, blinded by a dazzling light, and heard the voice of God saying “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
