Voices Online Edition
Vol. XVIII No. 4
Christmastide 2003 - Epiphany 2004

To Mom on Her 60th Birthday

Your children have established a Chair in your honor
But one that pays you in gratitude:

A cushion for all the comfort you've given,
Offering rest for our restlessness driven
Far beyond the school of worry;

Fabric that's fashioned from your motherly care
And sewn from your joyful commitment to share
All you had in your inventory;

Springs that were hope and frame that was love,
Guiding us under our stars up above,
Letting unfold our personal story;

Sturdy legs that once ran to our aid,
Buttons and threads for all that you made
That gave our life its glory;

This transmutation is to say,
"Thank you mom for the light of day
And all you've given along the way."

Your rewards are rich and your honor is great;
Let others envy your exalted state.

May the days up ahead not be spent in declining,
But happily poised in a position reclining.
