Anne Stewart Connell, a founding member of Women for Faith & Family, died April 27, 2003 after a brief illness. She was Vice-President of WFF's original board (1984), and in 1998, she received the organization's Faith & Family Award for outstanding service to the Catholic faith and the family.

Anne Marie Stewart Connell was born in Philadelphia, where she attended Ravenhill Academy and Pierce Business School. In 1947 she married James M. Connell, and the couple had six daughters and five sons. Her husband died in 1992. In addition to her children, their spouses, and five sisters and a brother, she is survived by 28 grandchildren.

While the family lived in Iowa, Mrs. Connell was an active volunteer for several charitable organizations, and in 1973 she started a chapter of Birthright in Waterloo, Iowa.

In 1978, after Mr. Connell retired, the couple moved to St. Louis, where Anne continued her affiliation with Birthright, and wrote occasional columns for the Catholic weekly newspaper The Wanderer. Until her health began to fail in recent years, she remained a vigorous and active advocate for pro-life and pro-family efforts in her adopted city, and her intelligent encouragement benefited many. She lived across the street from her parish church, Our Lady of Lourdes, where she attended daily Mass.

Anne Connell's abiding love of her Catholic faith and her devotion to her family were an example and an inspiration to all who knew her and worked with her.

"A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.... May her works praise her in the gates" [Proverbs 31:30, 31].
