(305-384) Of Spanish descent, he summoned synods and councils, notably, the First Council of Constantinople, to defend the Church against schismatics and heretics. He widely promoted the veneration of the martyrs. It was he who commissioned St. Jerome's translation of the Bible and who changed the liturgical language from Greek to Latin.

Grant, we pray, O Lord,
that we may constantly exalt the merits of your Martyrs,
whom Pope Saint Damasus so venerated and loved.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with your in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. +Amen.

Reading: Acts 20:17-18a,28-32,36
And from
Miletus Paul sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of
the church. And when they came to him, he said to them:
"You yourselves know how I lived among you all the time
from the first day that I set foot in Asia, Take heed to yourselves
and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,
to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood
of His own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves
will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among
your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw
away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering
that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish
every one with tears.
And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which
is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among
all those who are sanctified.
And when he had spoken thus, he knelt down and prayed with them
all.
Gospel
Reading: John 15:9-17
As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you; abide in My
love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love,
just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His
love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in
you, and that your joy may be full.
"This is My commandment, that you love one another as I
have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man
lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you
do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for
the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have
called you friends, for all that I have heard from My Father
I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose
you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that
your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father
in My name, He may give it to you. This I command you, to love
one another.
