The Honorable Jeb Bush
Governor of Florida

Re: Terri Schiavo case

Dear Governor Bush,

I am the director of a Catholic organization, Women for Faith & Family, representing about 50,000 women who affirm Catholic teachings. I have just become aware of the case of Terri Schindler Schiavo http://www.terrisfight.org, and of her parents' effort to obtain guardianship from her husband, Michael Schiavo, in order to care for her. Mr. Schiavo is attempting to have her feeding tube removed to cause her death.

I have reviewed the information and watched the video clips on the web site, and am convinced that she is not in the so-called "persistent vegetative state". She is obviously responsive, and, though impaired, capable of meaningful interaction with those who love her and care for her. She is not "terminally ill" or dying, so removal of the feeding tube that sustains her cannot be considered morally permissible. She is entitled to our support and protection.

On behalf of Women for Faith & Family, who has filed "friend of the court" briefs in other similar cases in Missouri, where we are based, (Christine Busalacchi and Nancy Cruzan), I ask you to review Terri Schiavo's case and to intercede on her behalf.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Helen Hull Hitchcock, Director
