Voices Online Edition
Vol. XXIV, No. 1
Eastertide 2009

Women for Faith & Family
Celebrating 25 years of service to the Church
1984-2009

Unsurprised by Darkness

If God’s own Son
had to brink despair
dying in the darkness
of noonday night

why should I
know a tranquil passage
from finite groping
to infinite Light

why am I shocked
by the daily trauma
woven into
the heart of flesh

the rending anger
perdures from the womb
till the hands are folded
in the calm of death

see the stars
and ponder the Word
in whom each galaxy
finds its being

then watch the one
whose humble coming
respects the measure
of our seeing

for “who can live
with a blazing fire?”
O mercifully mercifully
hidden God

coming as breeze
coming as bread
coming through the grape
our feet have trod

— Ralph Wright, OSB
